Ceramic House, Jinhua, China, 2006
Wang Shu & Lu Wenyu founded the Amateur Architecture Studio in 1998 based in Hangzhou, China. The office name refers to the approach an amateur builder takes—one based on spontaneity, craft and cultural traditions. Wang Shu spent several years working on building sites to learn traditional skills. The firm utilizes this knowledge to adapt and transform materials for contemporary projects. This unique combination of traditional understanding, experimental building tactics and intensive research defines the basis of the studio’s work.
The Amateur Architecture Studio have produced projects which have been published in China and abroad, with many shown in international exhibitions.
